Do you remember seeing or experiencing the birth of a child? It was messy. There was pain. And tears. How do the usual images of the birth of Jesus reveal this kind of birth? The little manger scenes always seem very clean and tidy. Not so sure it was that pure. For Jesus to become a human being there had to be tears, pain and it was messy. That’s always how it is when God is born in us. When the old in us dies to make room for Jesus, we need to expect what happened in the stable.
O that you would tear open the heavens and come down.
Isaiah 64:1
The angel said to Mary, "You will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High."
Luke 1:31-32
Thank you for your wisdom, Most High God. You did not tear open the heavens. Jesus came quietly, humbly. He was born a human baby from Mary's womb. As your Son, he is eternal God. Fully human, Jesus bore my sins. Fully God, he grants me eternal life. Prepare my heart to meet Jesus, face to face. Amen.
