Struggles with God make us Israelites. In our old nature all of us struggle with God and discover we cannot win but must let go of our need to control our lives and to try to control God. Jacob wrestled with God and learned that through this struggle, he received a new name, a new identity. This is our calling. When we were baptized, we were buried with Christ so that we might walk with Jesus in newness of life (Romans 6:3-4). But our old nature fights this. Our old nature wants God to bless us in our old ways. But God tells us, “you must deny yourself and take up your cross and follow me” (Mark 8:34). This is the way, the truth and the life and no one comes to the Father except by dying that Jesus might raise us up again. Today at the Mount Baldy lodge, a handful of us pictured above discuss what it means to let God be God and for us to simply be His blessed children.
I will not let you go, unless you bless me.
Genesis 32:26
Then children were being brought to him in order that he might lay his hands on them and pray.
Matthew 19:13
Gracious God, like Jacob, I have foibles, yet you love me. As I wrestle with you, these become your blessings to the world around me. You use them to bring hope to imperfect people. Your prayers bless my new identity. I am your beloved child. Help me share your way of blessing with those I may struggle with today. Amen.
