Jeff and Mim discuss how the Messiah (Jesus) will judge with righteousness and equity for the poor and the oppressed (cf. Isaiah 11:4). This will be light and truth (Lux et Veritas) The statistics regarding the poor are staggering: 8.5 percent of the world’s population (ca. 700 million people) live is extreme poverty on less that $2.12 USD per day. Another 17.5 percent of world’s population (ca. 1.1 billion people) live in acute multidimensional poverty — half of whom are children. Truly, as Jesus said, “The poor you will always have with you” (Matthew 26:11). But what is our response? When we serve the least of these, we also serve Jesus himself (cf. Matthew 25:31-46). Jeff mention’s the Cape Town Commitment (2010) from the Lausanne Movement for World Evangelism, where the church is tasked with integral mission — to proclaim both the truth of the gospel and to show the truth through loving care and actions.
With righteousness he shall judge for the poor and decide with equity for the oppressed of the earth.
Isaiah 11:4
Jesus answered them, "Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, those with a skin disease are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have good news brought to them."
Matthew 11:4-5
Merciful Savior, I rejoice at the good news you bring. I confess I am often unable to see or hear or walk in your ways. You are my healing and my help. You set me free so I can work on justice for others who are oppressed. Help me to bear witness to your good news today. Amen.
