Who are you staring at? In the mirror? In a Zoom call? In a photo album? It’s us isn’t it. Try to look the other way but you will look back because inside we know it’s all about us. And we like it. Today’s verses make us ask the hard question…how do we get out of the way? The more you try the more you keep staring. This is why Martin Luther described sin as being “turned in on yourself.” We are born into this way of looking and it will always sneak in. So what does it mean “to die to yourself daily and take up your cross and follow me?” Our prayer is that these podcasts may let the Holy Spirit free you from yourself a little more each day. Paul states it in 2 Corinthians 3:18, “as we look at Jesus, we see His glory and we are changed into His image from one degree of glory to another.” The Spirit will help us. Let’s begin now. Look to Jesus.
Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to your name give glory, for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness.
Psalm 115:1
Those who speak on their own seek their own glory, but the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and there is nothing unjust in him.
John 7:18
Faithful God, thank you for the steadfast love I can trust. Like the sun, your splendor lights my path. Often, I make things up to polish my image, forgetting to listen for your voice before I speak. Open my ears to hear your voice, my heart to know your truth, and my mouth to glorify your name only. Amen.
