( Theta ) Help Hope For You (Psalm 146:5 & Matthew 26:27 28)

On Holy Thursday, or Maundy Thursday, we will worship receiving the Lord’s Supper remembering this night He was betrayed. But following that meal Jesus took his disciples into the Garden of Gethsemane and prayed. His prayer is painted by He Qi. We have a copy of this hanging in our home thanks to our friend Dianne. Jesus is praying, “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.” (Matt. 26:39 NKJV). Three times Jesus prayed in a place where olives were crushed three times to make olive oil. The crushing truth Jesus was facing in this garden was not the pain he would face but being abandoned by God His Father. It’s the power of the cross that at the same time that Jesus was in the center of God’s will, the Father would not be near Him. “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” (Matt. 27:46 NKJV). The Gethsemane prayers reveal how far apart we are from God that the Son of God must be crushed, isolated, forsaken for us to be saved. And where are we in all this trauma? With the disciples. Asleep. May the Holy Spirit wake us up to see how desperately we needed Jesus to be crushed for our sake.

Old Testament Verse

Happy are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD their God.
Psalm 146:5

New Testament Verse

Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he gave it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins."
Matthew 26:27-28

Prayer

In this new commandment I hear again how you forgive me and bring hope for this Easter weekend. Thank you for taking the cup of suffering for my sake and pouring out your lifeblood for me. I am filled with remorse for the state of the world but still there's joy, knowing your covenant redeems and overcomes it all. Amen.
