An immigrant’s journey is not unlike Israel’s exile into captivity. The old is abandoned with hope for something new. The cross bridges the past and future, shadow and light, the old and the new, emphasizing that true transformation comes solely through Jesus Christ and His redemptive work on the cross and his resurrection. Many immigrants come from oppression and bondage. New life comes only through the good news of Jesus Christ. He is the one who sets the captives free and liberates the oppressed. Is the Church ready to come alongside, to assist and to proclaim Christ’s love through word and deed? Let’s welcome God’s opportunities and initiatives to do new things among us and to make things new. The Father said, “This is my Son, my Beloved; listen to him.” May we all see with new eyes — and see only Jesus. May we see each other as Christ sees us, through His redemptive work.
Do not remember the former things or consider the things of old. I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth; do you not perceive it?
Isaiah 43:18-19
So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; look, new things have come into being!
2 Corinthians 5:17
Thank you for being my life-giving and renewing Savior. You have freed me from my past. I am a new creation in you. I am no longer stuck in my muck. Show me the new things that you are doing. Help me to perceive this again today. I want your renewing love to be my new thing. Amen.
