The texts for today raise the problem of why we suffer. For all humans, we believe that we bring suffering upon us and it is in some way punishment for our wrong behavior, or our sinful thoughts words or deeds. But today as we consider these verses, we are able to see the light of Jesus who enters the darkness of our suffering and reaches into the world of our confusion with the light of His word, His promise, His presence. Jesus says, “I am with you always” and this includes all our suffering.
Thus said the Lord, "Just as I have brought all this great disaster upon this people, so I will bring upon them all the good fortune that I now promise them."
Jeremiah 32:42
Our hope for you is unshaken, for we know that as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our consolation.
2 Corinthians 1:7
Thank you, Lord, for your rich promises of comfort and consolation. Whenever I experience sorrow, suffering, loss, or unexpected setbacks, you are there to build me up and give me peace and assurance. I confess I have doubted your love and care for me in times of trouble. Show me how to share your consolations with others. Amen.
