Several from our group had the traumatic experience of lamenting yesterday. Their plane from Athens was late. The Lufthansa plane didn’t wait for them. Lamenting filled the day for each of them. Stranded. No bags. No tickets for travel. No hotel for a refuge. No solace from either the Aegean Airline company or Lufthansa. They were consigned to stay in the worst area of airports, the area where you check in. No place to sit. The ticket agents showed little or no concern for their plight. Lament was overwhelming. What do we do with our laments? When my father, mother and sister were POW’s in the Philippines in WW 2, lamenting was a regular part of their life. My dad’s solution at the beginning of his imprisonment was to read the Psalms and underline with a green pencil every time the psalmist lamented over his plight. Then when we would read the Psalms he could always see the green pastures where lamentations were expressed toward God. As you read today’s texts, think about those Psalms where you can find your rest in the words of the Psalms that voice your personal laments. Start with Psalm 3…”O Lord, how many are my foes! Many are rising against me…” Turn your book of Psalms into green pastures for your life. Lament is normal for us when we follow Jesus. It was normal for Him as well. St Paul helps us see this in Romans 8. We groan with our laments. Today as you pray, please pray with laments to God for our 15 stranded friends in Germany as we search for ways to get them home on Thursday.
The LORD is good to those who wait for him, to the soul that seeks him.
Lamentations 3:25
Listen! I am standing at the door, knocking; if you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in and eat with you, and you with me.
Revelation 3:20
My Lord, it is comforting to know that you are waiting for me to accept your invitation when you knock at my door. I have not always responded even though your promptings have been obvious-forgive me! Today, as I open the door and invite you in, I look forward with joy to renewing our communion and fellowship together! Amen.
