On Monday in Holy Week, Jesus cleanses the temple. This mosaic from a church in Palermo, Italy is just one of many renderings of Jesus cleansing the temple. But why did He do this? His commandment is what He declares in Matthew 21:13. “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you make it a den of robbers.” The temple cleansing is needed to make it accessible for all who seek a relationship with God. This is Holy Week’s purpose. But not for the temple in Jerusalem. God wants our lives to be cleansed to be His temple so that people may find access to the living God through us. Paul writes this in 1 Corinthians 3:16-17. “Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? [17] If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.” Our temple, that is our body, is to be a house of prayer. God has chosen to dwell in you and in me so that our lives may be shaped by prayer in Jesus’ name. What needs to be cleansed in us today so that we might be renewed to be God’s temple on this earth?
You must neither add anything to what I command you nor take away anything from it, but keep the commandments of the LORD your God with which I am charging you.
Deuteronomy 4:2
For I will not be so bold as to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me to win obedience from the gentiles, by word and deed.
Romans 15:18
I thank you, Father, that through the guidance of your Spirit I can win unbelievers to you. You have inspired teachers to help me to seek and to save the lost. Your word compels me to declare the finished work of Christ to all I meet. Use my voice this week to proclaim hope in Jesus. Amen.
